What Is Spot UV — And Why Does It Work So Well on Business Cards?
Spot UV (short for spot ultraviolet) is a finishing process where a clear, high-gloss polymer coating is applied to precisely selected areas of a printed card using UV light to instantly cure and harden it. Unlike a standard gloss laminate — which coats the entire surface — spot UV hits only the areas you choose. Everything else stays matte.
The result is a dramatic visual and tactile contrast. Your logo catches the light. Your name has a texture you can feel with your fingertip. The rest of the card stays understated and clean. It’s subtle when the card is lying flat, and striking when it catches the light at an angle — which is exactly when someone’s holding it and paying attention.
It works particularly well on bold logos, geometric patterns, company names, and solid shapes. It doesn’t suit very fine lines or tiny text — the UV application has an inherent ±0.5mm tolerance, so anything intricate risks looking slightly misaligned. The rule of thumb from any experienced print team is simple: go bold, go large, and let the UV do the work

When Should You Choose Spot UV Business Cards?
Spot UV is the right choice when the card itself needs to communicate premium — when you want the person receiving it to register, even subconsciously, that you’re a business that takes quality seriously. It’s not always the right choice for every brief, so here’s an honest guide:
Spot UV works brilliantly for: Professionals and businesses where first impressions carry weight — lawyers, accountants, financial advisers, architects, designers, estate agents, consultants, premium hospitality, luxury retail. Also ideal for anyone who hands out cards at networking events where your card needs to stand out from a pile of standard ones.
Spot UV works well when: Your logo or key design element is a solid shape, a bold wordmark, or a geometric pattern. Large solid areas of UV look exceptional. The contrast between a matte background and a high-gloss logo is as clean and impactful as business card finishes get.
Spot UV isn’t ideal when: Your design relies on very fine lines, hairline detail, or small text that you want UV’d. The ±0.5mm registration tolerance means fine detail can look slightly off. If your design is intricate, standard gloss lamination or soft-touch lamination may give you a cleaner result — speak to us and we’ll advise.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does spot UV mean?
Spot UV stands for ‘spot ultraviolet’. It’s a printing finish where a clear, high-gloss polymer coating is applied selectively to specific areas of a card using UV light to cure it instantly. The result is a raised, glossy effect on chosen parts of your design — your logo, name, or a pattern — that contrasts with the matt background. The effect is both visual (the gloss catches the light) and tactile (you can feel the raised coating with your fingertip).
What’s the difference between spot UV and gloss lamination?
Gloss lamination covers the entire surface of the card with an even sheen. Spot UV is selective — it only applies the gloss to specific areas you designate, while the rest of the card stays matt. Spot UV creates a much more dramatic and premium contrast effect than full gloss lamination.
Can spot UV be applied to both sides of the card?
Yes. We offer single-sided spot UV (UV on the front only, which is the most common option) and double-sided spot UV (UV on both front and back). Supply artwork for both UV layers in your PDF if you want the double-sided finish.
Why can’t you do rounded corners on spot UV cards?
Rounded corners are die-cut after printing and finishing. The cutting process at the corner can cause the spot UV coating to lift, crack, or peel at the edge — which would compromise the premium finish. For this reason, spot UV cards are only available with standard square corners.
What gsm are your spot UV business cards?
Our spot UV cards are printed on 400gsm silk as standard — this is the weight we recommend for spot UV. It provides the rigidity and premium feel that makes the UV finish look and feel its best. Thinner card weights don’t showcase the UV effect as well.
Do I need to supply print-ready artwork?
No. Free artwork design is included with every order. Send us your logo, your contact details, your brand colours, and any other information you’d like on the card, and our team designs it for you — including setting up the spot UV layer correctly. We send a proof for your approval before printing. If you have your own print-ready artwork, we’ll check the file setup for free before printing.
How quickly can you print and deliver spot UV business cards?
Standard turnaround for spot UV business cards is 3–5 working days from artwork approval, with free UK delivery included. If you need them faster, call us on 01708 200166 and we’ll advise what’s possible — we can often accommodate tighter deadlines.
What’s the minimum order quantity?
Select your quantity using the product options above. We print from small quantities — there’s no punishingly large minimum. The unit cost reduces significantly as quantity increases, so if you need cards for a whole team or a large networking push, it’s worth ordering in volume.
How is spot UV different from embossing?
Spot UV creates a raised gloss effect using a UV-cured polymer coating — the card is flat underneath the UV, which sits above the surface. Embossing physically raises the card material itself by pressing it between metal dies. Both create a tactile 3D effect, but spot UV also adds gloss and shine, whereas embossing is typically matte. Spot UV is generally more cost-effective than embossing for smaller quantities.
